Testimonies

Jenny Fitzgerald has developed a trusted relationship with Valley Christian Schools for placing students into quality homestays, and then skillfully managing them to our school’s expectations. I admire her patience and insight in dealing with both students, parents, and host families!

Jenny has the perfect combination of warmth and leadership with both the host families and the students and has the experience over several years to make the program a big success. We have had many short-term international student stays and hosted a boy from China this year. I recommend this experience to every family to open your eyes to the world!

I have known Jenny since summer 2014 when I opened my home as a host family to 3 international students that stayed with me for one month. Now, I host a full time student who started school in September.
When the boys arrived, they had a schedule already in place, a driver that picked them up and brought them home after their activities, and a clear understanding of what they were doing during their stay in the U.S.
Throughout, Jenny was there when needed for support. She is a caring person who makes herself available to answer questions regarding academics, health insurance, discipline, etc. She always provides the answers and guidance needed.
Even though I’ve known Jenny for only a few months, I feel confident recommending her, not only because of her experience, but also her character. I would trust her to place my child in a safe, loving home. She has been a host family herself and has experience with what needs to be done when different situations/issues come up. I have peace of mind knowing that she is there when either the host family or child’s parents need her assistance.
I enjoy working with Jenny and am confident that you will as well.

Jenny is an excellent international student homestay coordinator. In this warm family, I feel the love. She cared for my son as if he were her own. Jenny also helps me communicate with teachers. We get along very well, like friends!

Bringing a student from abroad into your home is quite an adventure! Including them in your family can be a joy but it can be challenging as well. Jenny has placed 2 school year students and 6 summer stay students in my home. Having Jenny as my coordinator has been a joy! Jenny has very good suggestions to make the students’ transition easier and she rejoices with me when the settling in process is smooth. One of her ideas to help the students feel comfortable engaging in activities with the family included giving the students a household chore so they feel like part of the family. Most students enjoy trying new foods, so Jenny suggested asking if there is an American food they would like to try then making it for them which shows you want to include them. Another big hit is asking if they have a favorite dish from home they could teach you to make!! Occasionally some cultural differences come up or misunderstandings about household rules. Jenny will intercede with either a suggestion or a call to the student.
She works hard to make sure the experience is a good one on both sides. She seeks to have students who are respectful, and homes that are loving and inclusive!! Having Jenny as my coordinator has been a joy!

Host Family

Jenny is very easy to work with. She is understanding and helpful and her whole family is open and kind hearted. I have a few suggestions for new families considering hosting international students. It’s more of a commitment than just having a renter in the house who needs food, laundry service and some interaction. Having an international student is just like raising a child. He needs love. He needs attention and guidance and discipline. He needs rides to games and friends to come over, help with school work and help developing as a person (not just as a student). It’s a huge responsibility, particularly for families hosting younger children, not just a light-hearted relationship and an easy way to make money. My student interacts with us and feels secure to be himself inside of a safe and loving environment. And Jenny is available to respond to all my inquiries and to help me provide that to my student. I appreciate her!!

I have known and worked with Jenny Fitzgerald for four years. Since 2014 she has recruited trained, and supported homestay families who have served our high school international students. Jenny is a gifted leader and communicator, and I am very impressed with the level of care she shows the host families and the students who live with them. She meets with our staff regularly to co-ordinate academic and social needs of the students, so that together we may better serve the host families. She is amazing, and I give my most enthusiastic recommendation to Homestay San Jose!

My 14-year-old son was sent to America in September 2016. Like all other Chinese parents, I was full of the best hope for his future and nervousness for his independent life in America at that time.
As time goes by, my son came back home for the Christmas holidays in 2017. I saw that he is becoming more and more healthy and stronger. I am pleased to see his progress and realize that sending him to America is a good decision. Now I will share his experiences in America with all of my friends.
Andy and Jenny, who have 4 children, are my son’s host family, which is full of love and warmth. They took care of my son just like their own kids, so my son was soon made to feel a part of the family. They often went out together to watch football games, have picnics, visit friends and relatives, and take part in various parties. With these activities, the community problems of international students vanished, and the community language was becoming more and more fluent. My son was gradually integrated into the life and culture of America.
As the only child in my family, my son was pampered at home. When he arrived in America, he started to clean his own room, wash his clothes, make plans for his study. So, the ability of taking care of himself was improved quickly. In this big family, he learned how to compromise and take care of others, he became more and more confident and friendly.
There is a big difference between American education and Chinese education. High school students in America can choose the course according to their own knowledge level and their interests, and the classes are full of interaction. There are many sports clubs which allow students to join in on a voluntary basis. There are also many social groups which regularly hold activities. I am actually finding that my son’s interests in studying are improved, and his academic records are good. He said learning in America is fun.
